SCRIPTURE

"And thou shalt make a veil of blue, and purple, and scarlet, and fine twined linen: with cherubim the work of the skilful workman shall it be made." — Exodus 26:31 (ASV)

5. THE VEIL, AND THE POSITION IT WAS TO OCCUPY.

Thou shalt make a vail. — It was essential to the mishkân (the Tabernacle) that it have an outer and an inner sanctuary. The outer area served as a place for the daily priestly duties. The inner area was an adytum or penetrale—an innermost sanctuary of extreme holiness—where the Divine Presence was to dwell. Only the high priest was privileged to enter this inner sanctuary, and he could do so only once a year. (Leviticus 16:2–34; Hebrews 9:7.) The separation between these two chambers was to be made by a veil, crafted from the same materials and with the same workmanship as the inner covering of the mishkân (Exodus 26:1).
