"that thou hast built unto thee a vaulted place, and hast made thee a lofty place in every street." — Ezekiel 16:24 (ASV)

Built unto thee an eminent place. —The word literally means arches. Such arched rooms were used in connection with the worship of idols for licentious purposes. Therefore, the marginal translation indicates the true purpose of the structure, whether the word is understood literally, or spiritually as unfaithfulness to God.

In the following verse, the indiscriminateness of Israel’s idolatry is expressed in the strongest terms. Then, in the following verses, the adoption of the idolatries of several nations in particular is specified.
