Charles Ellicott Commentary
"besides their men-servants and their maid-servants, of whom there were seven thousand three hundred thirty and seven: and they had two hundred singing men and singing women." — Ezra 2:65 (ASV)
The Rabbis accounted for these "ut lætior esset Israelitarum reditus," so that the return of the Israelites might be more joyful. But they were hired for lamentation as well as for joy, and in this case, possibly to supply the deficiency of Levites. In Nehemiah 7:67, there are 245. For the probable reason for this mistranscription, see the reference to 245 in the next verse of that chapter.
