SCRIPTURE

"they gave after their ability into the treasury of the work threescore and one thousand darics of gold, and five thousand pounds of silver, and one hundred priests` garments." — Ezra 2:69 (ASV)

The dram was a daric, worth a little more than our guinea, and the pound (or maneh) was a little more than £4. Consequently, the total sum would be nearly £90,000, an amount that was not exorbitant for a community far from poor. However, Nehemiah's statement indicates a smaller sum, which is probably more correct.

One hundred priests’ garments. —An almost necessary correction or supply in the defective text of Nehemiah (Nehemiah 7:70) changes his account of the Tirshatha’s contribution from “four hundred and thirty priests’ garments” to “five hundred pounds of silver and thirty priests’ garments.” If this adjustment is made, the two accounts can be reconciled, assuming that Ezra’s figure of 61,000 in gold is a corruption of 41,000, and that his amounts of 5,000 pounds of silver and 100 priests’ garments are round numbers.
