Ezra 8

1819–1905

Verse 1

"Now these are the heads of their fathers` [houses], and this is the genealogy of them that went up with me from Babylon, in the reign of Artaxerxes the king:" — Ezra 8:1 (ASV)

A list of the chief names, given by families, of those who accompanied Ezra.

(1) This is the genealogy.—The names of the heads of houses are generally followed by that of the wider families they belonged to. With this list is to be compared the register of those who went up with Zerubbabel (Ezra 2:2 and following).

Verses 2-3

"Of the sons of Phinehas, Gershom. Of the sons of Ithamar, Daniel. Of the sons of David, Hattush. Of the sons of Shecaniah, of the sons of Parosh, Zechariah; and with him were reckoned by genealogy of the males a hundred and fifty." — Ezra 8:2-3 (ASV)

According to 1 Chronicles 3:22, Huttush was a descendant of David, and grandson of Shechaniab. The difficulty of the text, therefore, is perhaps best resolved by punctuating it as follows: “Of the sons of David. Hattush of the sons of Shechaniab. Of the sons of Pharosh, Zechariah.”

Verse 5

"Of the sons of Shecaniah, the son of Jahaziel; and with him three hundred males." — Ezra 8:5 (ASV)

The son of Janaziel. —Obviously a name is omitted. The Septuagint has, “of the sons of Zattu, Shechaniah,” before Jahaziel.

Verse 10

"And of the sons of Shelomith, the son of Josiphiah; and with him a hundred and threescore males." — Ezra 8:10 (ASV)

Here also a name is missing. The Septuagint has, of the sons of Bani, Shelomith, the son of Josiphiah.

Verse 13

"And of the sons of Adonikam, [that were] the last; and these are their names: Eliphelet, Jeuel, and Shemaiah; and with them threescore males." — Ezra 8:13 (ASV)

And of the last sons. —The younger branches, the elder being reported in Ezra 2:13.
