SCRIPTURE

"And he divided himself against them by night, he and his servants, and smote them, and pursued them unto Hobah, which is on the left hand of Damascus." — Genesis 14:15 (ASV)

Hobah ... on the left hand of Damascus. —That is, to the north, as the Hebrews looked eastward when determining the cardinal directions. The victory had thus been followed up with great energy, and the pursuit, according to Josephus, lasted the whole of the next day and night after the day on which the attack was made. At Hobah, the mountains cease, and the great plain of Damascus begins, and further pursuit was therefore useless.
