Charles Ellicott Commentary
"The God of Abraham, and the God of Nahor, the God of their father, judge betwixt us. And Jacob sware by the Fear of his father Isaac." — Genesis 31:53 (ASV)
Judge. —The verb is plural, “be he judges,” and as Laban thus joins the name Elohim with a plural verb, it seems he regarded Abraham’s Elohim as different from the Elohim of Nahor. We should, therefore, translate the gods of their father.
Apparently, he thought that Abraham took one of Terah’s Elohim, and Nahor another. His views were thus polytheistic. In general, the ancients regarded the gods as local beings, with powers limited to certain districts.
Jacob swears by the one Being who was the sole object of Isaac’s worship. (See Note on Genesis 20:13.)
