Charles Ellicott Commentary

Charles Ellicott Commentary
"And Jacob called the name of the place Peniel: for, [said he], I have seen God face to face, and my life is preserved." — Genesis 32:30 (ASV)
Peniel. — Elsewhere Penuel, and so it probably should be read here. It means, “the face of God.” For the rest of the verse, see Note on Genesis 16:13.
