Charles Ellicott Commentary Genesis 35:5

"And they journeyed: and a terror of God was upon the cities that were round about them, and they did not pursue after the sons of Jacob." — Genesis 35:5 (ASV)

The terror ... — Hebrew, a terror of God, that is, a very great terror (Genesis 30:8). But to the deeply religious mind of the Hebrew everything that was great and wonderful was the result of the direct working of the Deity. (But see Note on Genesis 48:22.)
