"And afterward came out his brother, that had the scarlet thread upon his hand: and his name was called Zerah." — Genesis 38:30 (ASV)

Zarah. —Hebrew, the rising, especially of the sun. There is in the name an allusion to the red streak placed (upon the child’s hand).
