Charles Ellicott Commentary

Charles Ellicott Commentary
"they, and every beast after its kind, and all the cattle after their kind, and every creeping thing that creepeth upon the earth after its kind, and every bird after its kind, every bird of every sort." — Genesis 7:14 (ASV)
Every beast. —Hebrew, every living thing , but we should probably supply “of the field,” and thus it would mean the wild animals.
The cattle — Behêmâh. (See Note on Genesis 1:24.)
Creeping thing. —Not specially reptiles, but all small animals (see ibid.). The last clause literally is, every fowl after its kind, every bird, every wing; from which some understand it as meaning three kinds of winged beings: birds generally, next singing-birds, and lastly, bats, insects, and other such creatures. It more probably means “birds of all sorts.”
