SCRIPTURE

"that by two immutable things, in which it is impossible for God to lie, we may have a strong encouragement, who have fled for refuge to lay hold of the hope set before us:" — Hebrews 6:18 (ASV)

Two immutable things.—The promise and the oath.

Consolation.—Rather, encouragement. The encouragement was designed for us, rather than for Abraham alone; for us, who (like people in danger of their lives fleeing to a sanctuary) fled for refuge to lay hold upon the hope set before us in the promise. Up to this point, we read of what God has done; here, of what must be done by humanity. The laying hold expresses faith, and implies patient waiting (Hebrews 6:12); by it we become true heirs of the promise (Hebrews 6:17).
