"In that he saith, A new [covenant] he hath made the first old. But that which is becoming old and waxeth aged is nigh unto vanishing away." — Hebrews 8:13 (ASV)

In that He says . . .—Rather, In saying “new” He has made the first old: now that which grows old and is failing for age is near to vanishing away. The very language of the prophet contains a declaration of the speedy dissolution of the former covenant. If it was “near to vanishing” at the time when Jeremiah wrote, it might well now be believed to have passed away.
