Charles Ellicott Commentary
"Who is wise, that he may understand these things? prudent, that he may know them? for the ways of Jehovah are right, and the just shall walk in them; but transgressors shall fall therein." — Hosea 14:9 (ASV)
Who is wise. —Hosea delivers his words to all students of the ways of God. The exhortation to wisdom is expressed in the form of a question. “Wisdom” and “wise men” take the place of “prophecy” and “prophets” in later Hebrew literature. Wisdom interprets both the word and its fulfilment. Christ’s own teaching goes beyond wisdom and prudence (Matthew 11:28; compare to 1 Corinthians 1:20): it was spirit and life (John 6:63).
