Charles Ellicott Commentary
"Jehovah hath mingled a spirit of perverseness in the midst of her; and they have caused Egypt to go astray in every work thereof, as a drunken man staggereth in his vomit." — Isaiah 19:14 (ASV)
The Lord has mingled a perverse spirit. —Better, has poured a spirit of giddiness. As in 1 Kings 22:22; 1 Samuel 16:14, the infatuation of the Egyptian rulers is thought of as a judicial blindness. Prostrate or vacillating amid the wrecks of frustrated hopes and plans, they are as the drunkard staggering in his foulness .
