SCRIPTURE

"In that day men shall cast away their idols of silver, and their idols of gold, which have been made for them to worship, to the moles and to the bats;" — Isaiah 2:20 (ASV)

A man shall cast his idols of silver ...—The picture of the earthquake is still continued. The men who have taken refuge in the caves fling away the idols, which they have found powerless to help them, to the moles and bats which dwelt there. It is perhaps significant that the animals so named were known for their blindness and love of darkness. The prophet seems to say that these were the fitting custodians of the idols, which no one could worship except those who hated the light and were spiritually blind.

Which they made each one for himself.—Better, which they (the carvers of the idol) made for him (the worshipper).
