Charles Ellicott Commentary
"Therefore shall the word of Jehovah be unto them precept upon precept, precept upon precept; line upon line, line upon line; here a little, there a little; that they may go, and fall backward, and be broken, and snared, and taken." — Isaiah 28:13 (ASV)
That they might go, and fall backward ... —The words are an echo of those in Isaiah 8:14-15. The preaching which might have led to rest and refreshing would become to those who scorned it a stumbling stone on which they would fall, a net in which they, who boasted of their freedom, would be entangled.
