"The highways lie waste, the wayfaring man ceaseth: [the enemy] hath broken the covenant, he hath despised the cities, he regardeth not man." — Isaiah 33:8 (ASV)

The highways lie waste ... — Another feature in the picture of terror. No traveller dared to show himself on the main road. .

He has broken. — Sennacherib is denounced as having broken the treaty of 2 Kings 18:14. Hezekiah had complied with his conditions, and yet there was no suspension of hostilities.
