Charles Ellicott Commentary Isaiah 52:9

"Break forth into joy, sing together, ye waste places of Jerusalem; for Jehovah hath comforted his people, he hath redeemed Jerusalem." — Isaiah 52:9 (ASV)

Ye waste places of Jerusalem ... —The history of the return of the exiles in Ezra 1:3, seems a somewhat poor and prosaic fulfilment of the glorious vision; but it lies in the nature of the case, that the words of the prophet, contemplating the distant future, idealise that return, and connect it unconsciously, it may be, with another city than the earthly Jerusalem.
