"And Jehovah said unto me, A conspiracy is found among the men of Judah, and among the inhabitants of Jerusalem." — Jeremiah 11:9 (ASV)

A conspiracy. —The words explain the rapid apostasy that followed on the death of Josiah. There had been all along, even while he was urging his reforms, an organized, though secret, resistance to the policy of which he was the representative.
