SCRIPTURE

"Why shouldest thou be as a man affrighted, as a mighty man that cannot save? yet thou, O Jehovah, art in the midst of us, and we are called by thy name; leave us not." — Jeremiah 14:9 (ASV)

As a man astonied. —The word translated this way is not found elsewhere, but cognate words in Arabic mean to be startled and perplexed.

Thou, O Lord, art in the midst of us. —After all, then, the prophet’s reviving faith tells him that Jehovah is more than a passing guest. He still dwells among His people. He is like a mighty man, strong to save, though for now He refrains from action.

We are called by thy name. —Literally, as in the margin, Thy name is called upon us, i.e. (Isaiah 63:19; Isaiah 65:1), “we are still recognized as Yours, the people of Jehovah.”
