SCRIPTURE

"And it shall come to pass, when seventy years are accomplished, that I will punish the king of Babylon, and that nation, saith Jehovah, for their iniquity, and the land of the Chaldeans; and I will make it desolate for ever." — Jeremiah 25:12 (ASV)

I will punish the king of Babylon ... —These words are omitted in the Septuagint version of the chapter, which differs materially from the Hebrew text, and there are some internal grounds for suspecting this phrase to be a later addition, possibly made by the prophet himself, or more probably, by Baruch while collecting and editing the prophet's writings, or by some later transcriber. In Jeremiah 25:26, as commonly interpreted, there is a prediction of the destruction of the king of Babylon veiled in enigmatic language. We can understand this well enough if it was intended only for the initiated. However, it is not easy to see why the same prophetic discourse would contain both the veiled and the open prediction. Regarding the relation of the Septuagint version to the Hebrew, see Introduction.
