"Hearken not unto them; serve the king of Babylon, and live: wherefore should this city become a desolation?" — Jeremiah 27:17 (ASV)
Hearken not unto them. —The prophecy of the restoration of the vessels of the Temple was clearly not a mere prediction. It had been used as an incentive to rebellion. “Make one last effort,” the prophets virtually said, “and the spoiler will be compelled to disgorge his plunder.” The prophet saw that such an effort would only hasten the utter destruction of the Temple and the city.
