Charles Ellicott Commentary
"and I will make an everlasting covenant with them, that I will not turn away from following them, to do them good; and I will put my fear in their hearts, that they may not depart from me." — Jeremiah 32:40 (ASV)
I will make an everlasting covenant ...— The “covenant” thus promised is, it must be remembered, identical with that of Jeremiah 31:31—the “new covenant,” which shall never grow old and decay, but shall abide forever. “My fear” is identical with “the fear of the Lord,” which is the beginning of wisdom. The curse of Israel had been that they had been without that fear to restrain them from evil, and that the mere dread of punishment had proved powerless to supply its place.
