"One post shall run to meet another, and one messenger to met another, to show the king of Babylon that his city is taken on every quarter:" — Jeremiah 51:31 (ASV)

One post shall run to meet another. —The words exactly answer to the account of the capture of Babylon given in Herodotus, Book 1 (see Note on Jeremiah 51:24). The history of Belshazzar’s feast (Daniel 5:1–30) must obviously have ended in a like result. No words could paint more vividly the panic of the surprised city.
