"Nebuchadrezzar the king of Babylon hath devoured me, he hath crushed me, he hath made me an empty vessel, he hath, like a monster, swallowed me up, he hath filled his maw with my delicacies; he hath cast me out." — Jeremiah 51:34 (ASV)

He has made me an empty vessel. —The pronouns in one form of the Hebrew text are mostly in the plural: “devoured us, crushed us, made us.” The prophet speaks of himself and Israel as having suffered wrong and outrage at the hands of Nebuchadnezzar. The land had been spoiled until it was like an “empty vessel.”

He has swallowed me up like a dragon. —The Hebrew noun probably stands for a “crocodile” (Isaiah 51:9; Ezekiel 29:3), or is used generally for any sea monster. The “delicates” (“dainties” in Genesis 49:20) are the grain, wine, oil, and fruits of Palestine with which the Chaldean armies had enriched themselves.
