"Therefore, behold, the days come, that I will execute judgment upon the graven images of Babylon; and her whole land shall be confounded; and all her slain shall fall in the midst of her." — Jeremiah 51:47 (ASV)

Therefore, behold, the days come ... —The first word has its full force. The Israelite exiles were to infer from the rumours and disorders of the preceding verse, that the day of vengeance was at hand. The formula, “behold, the days come,” was Jeremiah’s customary manner of announcing a prediction (Jeremiah 16:14, and others). For “slain” some commentators read “wounded” or “smitten,” as the word is rendered in Psalms 69:26; Job 24:12, the words that follow indicating that the wounded shall have no power to escape, but shall fill the city with their corpses.
