"Oh that my words were now written! Oh that they were inscribed in a book!" — Job 19:23 (ASV)
Oh that my words were now written!—Some understand this to refer to the words he is about to utter; by others, they are interpreted generally. The former view is probably due to the Christian interpretation given to them and the great importance consequently attached to them. However, since the three verses, Job 19:25–27, are clearly more emphatic than any he has spoken until now (though they do not stand entirely alone), there is no reason why it should not be especially these very words that he desires, more than any others, to have recorded. Perhaps the “now”—meaning here—shows this.
Oh that they were printed.—This points us to primitive times, when writing materials and the use of writing involved some form of engraving, as was the case, for instance, with wax tablets in later times.
