Charles Ellicott Commentary
"Then a spirit passed before my face; The hair of my flesh stood up." — Job 4:15 (ASV)
A spirit passed before my face. — It is futile to argue from this passage that spiritual essences can be seen by the physical eye. This is because, first, the language is highly figurative and poetic. Second, everyone understands that a spiritual manifestation can be made only to the spirit.
Therefore, the notion of seeing a spirit is absurd in itself, as it involves the idea of seeing the invisible. However, it is conceivable that the perceptions of the inner spirit may be so vivid that they assume the character of outward manifestations.
