Verse 1

"Canst thou draw out leviathan with a fishhook? Or press down his tongue with a cord?" — Job 41:1 (ASV)

Leviathan. —There can be little doubt that by this is meant the crocodile or alligator, whatever may be the true meaning of behemoth.

Or his tongue ... —Some render, “or press down his tongue with a cord”; but the Authorised Version seems preferable.

Verse 2

"Canst thou put a rope into his nose? Or pierce his jaw through with a hook?" — Job 41:2 (ASV)

Hook. —Or, cord of rush.

A thorn. —Or, spike or hook.

Verse 4

"Will he make a covenant with thee, That thou shouldest take him for a servant for ever?" — Job 41:4 (ASV)

A servant for ever. —The crocodile being probably quite untamable.

Verse 6

"Will the bands [of fishermen] make traffic of him? Will they part him among the merchants?" — Job 41:6 (ASV)

Shall the companions make a banquet of him? —Or, Shall the bands of fishermen make merchandise of him? or, dig a pit for him? —the former suiting the parallelism better.

Verse 8

"Lay thy hand upon him; Remember the battle, and do so no more." — Job 41:8 (ASV)

Remember the battle. —“Bear in mind what you attempt, and you will not do it again.”
