"Peter saith unto him, Lord, why cannot I follow thee even now? I will lay down my life for thee." — John 13:37 (ASV)

Lord, why cannot I follow thee now?—True to his impulsive, self-confident character, St. Peter is impatient of the delay imposed upon him. He is ready, in the fullness of his love, now, and does not dream that in the moment of trial he will be found wanting.
