Charles Ellicott Commentary John 17:14

"I have given them thy word; and the world hated them, because they are not of the world, even as I am not of the world." — John 17:14 (ASV)

I have given them thy word; and the world hath hated them.—The terms "I" and "the world" are opposed to each other. The world’s hatred followed necessarily from the fact that Christ had given them God’s word, and that by it they had been separated from the world. (Compare to the note on John 17:6)

Because they are not of the world.—Compare to the note on John 15:18.
