"And yet they hearkened not unto their judges; for they played the harlot after other gods, and bowed themselves down unto them: they turned aside quickly out of the way wherein their fathers walked, obeying the commandments of Jehovah; [but] they did not so." — Judges 2:17 (ASV)

Went a whoring. —Idolatry throughout the Bible is regarded as a spiritual adultery (Exodus 34:15; Isaiah 54:5; Jeremiah 3:8; Ezekiel 23:37; Hosea 2:7; 2 Corinthians 11:2, and others).
