Charles Ellicott Commentary

Charles Ellicott Commentary
"Let him give his cheek to him that smiteth him; let him be filled full with reproach." — Lamentations 3:30 (ASV)
He giveth his cheek ... — The submission required reaches its highest point—a patience like that of Job 16:10; we may add, like that of the Sermon on the Mount (Matthew 5:39). It was harder to accept the Divine chastisement when it came through human agents. This was not how Jeremiah had once taught and acted (Jeremiah 20:1–6; Jeremiah 28:15). .
