Charles Ellicott Commentary
"Wherefore ye shall do my statutes, and keep mine ordinances and do them; and ye shall dwell in the land in safety." — Leviticus 25:18 (ASV)
Wherefore you shall do my statutes. —Better, And you shall do... that is, the previously mentioned statutes and ordinances concerning the sabbatical year and the Jubilee, which required great sacrifices.
You shall dwell in the land in safety.—As God is Israel’s strong tower and wall of defense, it is by keeping His commandments that the Israelites will enjoy the security that other nations endeavor to obtain by great labor and mighty armies.
And the land ... her fruit. —Moreover, He who has given Israel these statutes also controls the operations of nature.
Therefore, even though observing His laws would require them to abstain from cultivating the soil, the Lord will cause the land to yield an abundant harvest. This harvest will richly supply all their wants, and they will dwell there safely and quietly.
They will not be compelled to raid their neighbors for food or surrender to their enemies due to a lack of provisions (Josephus, Antiquities xiv.16, § 2; xv.1, § 2).
