SCRIPTURE

"and if ye shall reject my statutes, and if your soul abhor mine ordinances, so that ye will not do all my commandments, but break my covenant;" — Leviticus 26:15 (ASV)

And if you despise my statutes. — From passive indifference to the divine statutes mentioned in the preceding verse, their falling away is sure to follow. Hence, what was at first mere listlessness now develops into a contemptuous education concerning God’s ordinances.

Or if your soul abhors my judgments. — Better, and if your soul, etc., as the picture of their apostasy continues to develop.

But that you break my covenant. — Better, that you break, etc., without the “but,” which is not in the original and obscures the meaning of the passage, since it is their abhorrence of God’s law that breaks the divine covenant with them . The meaning is more accurately conveyed by rendering this clause as “Thus breaking my covenant,” or “Thereby breaking my covenant.”
