SCRIPTURE

"And the ruler of the synagogue, being moved with indignation because Jesus had healed on the sabbath, answered and said to the multitude, There are six days in which men ought to work: in them therefore come and be healed, and not on the day of the sabbath." — Luke 13:14 (ASV)

And the ruler of the synagogue answered with indignation.—The traditional law concerning the work of a Jewish physician stated that he was permitted to practice his vocation in emergencies and life-and-death cases, but not for chronic diseases like this one. This law the ruler of the synagogue wished to impose as a restraint upon the work of the Healer here.
