"For these are days of vengeance, that all things which are written may be fulfilled." — Luke 21:22 (ASV)
These be the days of vengeance.—The words correspond to the great tribulation of Saint Matthew and Saint Mark, and Saint Luke’s report of the discourse throughout also seems to be a paraphrase. The word “vengeance” may have been chosen, from this perspective, as an allusion to the teaching of Luke 18:7-8. It may be noted that this word, although not used exclusively by them, is nevertheless characteristic of both Saint Luke and Saint Paul (Romans 12:19; 2 Corinthians 7:11; and 2 Thessalonians 1:8). The reference to things which are (better, have been) written, is unique to Saint Luke.
