SCRIPTURE

"But Jesus answered and said, Suffer ye [them] thus far. And he touched his ear, and healed him." — Luke 22:51 (ASV)

Suffer ye thus far.—These words and this incident are unique to St. Luke. We are not told to whom the words were spoken. If to the disciples, they were a command to be patient and to let things take their course. If, as is possible, they were spoken to the servants and officers, they were a plea for His disciples: “Do not punish them for this one act.” The immediate healing of the ear supports the latter view, as it promoted conciliation.
