"And the soldiers also mocked him, coming to him, offering him vinegar," — Luke 23:36 (ASV)
Offering him vinegar.—Not even the prayer for their forgiveness had touched the hearts of the soldiers. But still, they did not know what they were doing and, true to their nature, only followed in the path where others led the way. Perhaps also, as rude as their natures were, there was a touch of rough kindliness mingled with their mockery, as shown in the offer of the vinegar, or sour wine, which they had brought for their own use (see Note on Matthew 27:48)—unless, indeed, we suppose the refinement of cruelty which held it before the eyes of the Sufferer, but did not, as happened afterwards, convey it to His lips.
