Charles Ellicott Commentary

Charles Ellicott Commentary
"To him that smiteth thee on the [one] cheek offer also the other; and from him that taketh away thy cloak withhold not thy coat also." — Luke 6:29 (ASV)
And to the one who strikes you . . .—See Notes on Matthew 5:39-40.
And the one who takes away your cloke.—St. Luke’s report of the maxim points to direct violence, St. Matthew’s to legal process. It is noticeable also that St. Luke inverts the order of the “cloke” and the “coat.” “If he takes the upper garment, give him the under one also.”
