"And those by the way side are they that have heard; then cometh the devil, and taketh away the word from their heart, that they may not believe and be saved." — Luke 8:12 (ASV)

Then comes the devil.—Note St. Luke’s use of this word instead of the “Satan” of St. Mark and “the wicked one” of St. Matthew, and his fuller statement of the purpose, lest they should believe and be saved.
