"And he said unto all, If any man would come after me, let him deny himself, and take up his cross daily, and follow me." — Luke 9:23 (ASV)

If any man will come after me.—See Notes on Matthew 16:24-28; Mark 8:34; Mark 9:1.

Take up his cross daily.—The adverb is peculiar to St. Luke’s report, and at least reminds us of St. Paul’s I die daily (1 Corinthians 15:31).
