"and Uzziah begat Jotham; and Jotham begat Ahaz; and Ahaz begat Hezekiah;" — Matthew 1:9 (ASV)

Ozias is the same person as Uzziah in the Old Testament. Three kings are omitted in the genealogy between Joram and Ozias: Ahaziah, Joash, and Amaziah.

The likely motive for this omission was to make the number of names in each section of the genealogy fit the symbolic standard of fourteen. Since three names had to be removed, the choice of these specific kings may have been influenced by their connection to the disastrous reign of Athaliah in the history of Judah's monarchy.

This omission teaches us that the phrase “A begat B” should not always be taken in a strictly literal, father-to-son sense. It can simply express the line of succession, even when intermediate generations are not mentioned.
