Charles Ellicott Commentary
"Verily I say unto you, It shall be more tolerable for the land of Sodom and Gomorrah in the day of judgment, than for that city." — Matthew 10:15 (ASV)
For the land of Sodom and Gomorrah — The thought implied in the previous verse is now explicitly asserted. The cities that stood out in world history as most conspicuous for their infamy were still less guilty (since they sinned against less light and knowledge) than those who rejected the messengers of the King. The same comparison reappears with the addition of Tyre and Sidon in Matthew 11:21.
In the day of judgment — The phrase, like the Old Testament’s “day of the Lord,” is broader in its meaning than what we commonly associate with it. It includes earlier and more earthly judgments, as well as the final judgment which is the great consummation of them all.
