Charles Ellicott Commentary
"Get you no gold, nor silver, nor brass in your purses;" — Matthew 10:9 (ASV)
Neither gold, nor silver — Luke mentions only “silver,” while Mark refers to “brass”—that is, bronze or copper coinage. Matthew’s report includes all three forms of money then in circulation.
The tense of the word translated as “provide” is significant. It implies that if the disciples already had money, they could take it. However, they were not to acquire it as a prerequisite for their journey, much less delay their departure until they had obtained it.
In your purses — This literally means in your girdles. The twisted folds of the girdle were, and still are, habitually used in the East instead of the Western “purse.”
