SCRIPTURE

"But when he saw the wind, he was afraid; and beginning to sink, he cried out, saying, Lord, save me." — Matthew 14:30 (ASV)

When he saw the wind boisterous—The adjective is missing from the best manuscripts.

He was afraid—In the conflict between sight and faith, faith was defeated, and with that came fear.

The supernatural strength left him, and his skill as a swimmer was not enough. As the waters began to close over him, he cried out in his agony.

Then the gracious pity of his Lord helped his “little faith” with a firm, sustaining grasp. This rescue came with a word of loving reproof, yet it also showed the Lord’s unwillingness even here to quench the smoking flax.
