Charles Ellicott Commentary
"And Jesus perceiving it said, O ye of little faith, why reason ye among yourselves, because ye have no bread?" — Matthew 16:8 (ASV)
O you of little faith — Our Lord does not reprove the lack of discernment that made the disciples slow to grasp the meaning of the parable, but rather their lack of faith. Discernment depended, at least in part, on imaginative power or acquired culture, for which they were not responsible.
However, their memory of the way their needs had been twice supplied should have taught them that no such extreme necessity, as they imagined, was likely to arise while He was with them. Therefore, their gross carnal interpretation of His words could not possibly have been the true one. Memory, in this case, should have been an aid to faith, and faith, in turn, would have sharpened spiritual discernment.
