Charles Ellicott Commentary

Charles Ellicott Commentary
"So his fellow-servant fell down and besought him, saying, Have patience with me, and I will pay thee." — Matthew 18:29 (ASV)
Have patience with me — No one can fail to note the dramatic force of the utterance of the very same words that had been used before by the debtor, who now appears as the creditor. In this case, the promise was not a vain pretense. A few weeks or months of labor would have enabled the debtor to pay what he owed. A person can atone for offenses against another person, though not against God.
