Charles Ellicott Commentary
"And when the season of the fruits drew near, he sent his servants to the husbandmen, to receive his fruits." — Matthew 21:34 (ASV)
When the time of the fruit drew near — We must be content with following the general meaning of the parable, as we cannot find an exact parallel in the history of Israel for the successive sending of the householder’s servants.
It is enough to see in these actions the general expectation that Israel’s developed life should be worthy of its calling (compare the language of Isaiah 5:4, I looked that it should bring forth grapes). We should also see the mission of the prophets who, as the servants of Jehovah, were sent from time to time to call the people to bring forth the fruits of righteousness.
